Patrons at a restaurant in Hangzhou watch the “Clinical Restaurant” PSA, which raises awareness of the new smoke-free law
We work with policymakers and civil society toward smoke-free laws for public spaces and to make homes smoke-free to eliminate the danger of secondhand smoke and reduce smoking overall.
Tobacco kills 8 million people each year, including 65,000 children who die from diseases related to secondhand smoke. Comprehensive smoke-free laws motivate smokers to quit and decrease exposure to harmful smoke for both smokers and bystanders.
How we work
Advocating for smoke-free policies
Providing technical assistance to local partners in Indonesia, where 309 cities/districts have now adopted 100% smoke-free policies covering over 72% of the population.
Funding capacity-strengthening activities and a multifaceted campaign in Ukraine to support passage of the 2022 comprehensive tobacco control law that made enclosed public spaces 100% smoke-free.
Assisting local partners in Paraguay to successfully advocate for a comprehensive smoke-free law in 2021 that prohibits tobacco use, including electronic nicotine delivery systems and heated tobacco products, in enclosed public places.
Running media campaigns to urge passage of a 2021 amendment that strengthens Mexico’s General Tobacco Control Law by including 100% smoke-free places across the country.
Mounting a powerful mass and social media campaign in the Mexican state of Nuevo León to underline that people have the right and the duty to report violations of the ban on smoking in public places.
Conducting workshops for participants in journalism, government and civil society organizations to enhance their knowledge and skills concerning tobacco control.
The Vietnam Tobacco Control Fund, in partnership with Vital Strategies, launched the three-month campaign “Don’t let e-cigarettes cloud our future” in 2023. Civil society groups including the Youth Union and Women’s Union reinforced the campaign with their own activities like a run under the banner “Vietnamese youth say ‘no’ to tobacco and e-cigarettes.”
