Publications Implementation of buprenorphine initiation and warm handoff protocols in emergency departments: A qualitative study of Pennsylvania hospitals Focused on a state with the fifth highest drug overdose mortality rate in the U.S., this study examined the perspectives of staff in six hospitals on the processes, challenges, and facilitators to buprenorphine initiation and warm handoff protocols in emergency departments. It yielded results that can be used to optimize implementation of those evidence-based modes of treatment and ongoing care.
Publications Public Perceptions of Ultra-Processed Products This research brief summarizes key findings from on public perceptions of ultra-processed foods and products in Brazil and Colombia. These findings offer a baseline against which outcomes of future communication on the negative effects of ultra-processed products can be compared.
Publications Rapid Mortality Surveillance of COVID-19 Using Verbal Autopsy Verbal autopsy is a technique for determining the most medically likely causes of death, where no physician is available to complete a medical certificate of cause of death. This study analyzed the reliability of a particular model of verbal autopsy for estimating the probability that the causes of 112 deaths in São Paolo, Brazil, were associated with COVID-19.
Publications South African consumers’ perceptions of front-of-package warning labels on unhealthy foods and drinks This study's findings support the adoption of warning labels that can improve consumer understanding of nutrition information and assist consumers in determining the nutritional quality of packaged foods and drinks.
Publications Improving quality of medical certification of causes of death in health facilities in Tanzania 2014-2019 Since 2015, Tanzania has been upgrading its civil registration and vital statistics system including efforts to improve the availability and quality of mortality data. In this case study, the computer application ANACONDA provided an effective means for evaluation of such efforts and helped target interventions to remaining weaknesses.
Publications Racial disparity in excess mortality in Brazil during COVID-19 times This study evaluated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on excess mortality by race/skin color in Brazil over the course of nine months in 2020. Excess mortality among black/brown populations was remarkably higher compared to the white population, being as high as 26.3%, and accounting for 58.9% of excess deaths.
