Program Overview

Shanghai has an advanced system for birth and death registration. All births and approximately two-thirds of deaths occur in health facilities, and by law, all births and deaths must be registered.

Sri Lanka has a mature and well-established, though largely paper-based, CRVS system dating back about 150 years.

Under the Bloomberg Philanthropies Data for Health Initiative, the Government of Tanzania has strengthened core aspects of the national CRVS system.

More than 93,000 people died of drug overdoses in 2020, the highest number of overdose deaths ever recorded in a single year in the United States.
