Tea stalls in Bangladesh are popular places to stop for people when they’re heading to work and home, or stopping for a refreshment.
But these shop also play a role in the sale of tobacco products. They are the most convenient place for people to come and go couple of times in a day.
With the support of Vital Strategies, 16 member organizations of the Bangladesh anti-tobacco alliance (BATA) have installed signboards carrying graphic health warnings about tobacco.
The signs feature a local cancer patient, with the message “Smoking can make you stop living, long before you die.”
The main objectives of this campaign is to show the deadly effects of tobacco use to as many people as possible.
About 110 signboards are being installed in Dhaka as pilot project in a tit-for-tat against big tobacco, which usually display their branding and logos on tea stalls. It’s the first time tea stalls are waving the flags for anti-tobacco activists.
